Element projects are commissioned by Leaving Care Teams, Social Work Teams, Virtual Schools and other organisations working with care leavers. Here's how it works:

The projects consist of 11 sessions, usually delivered over 6 weeks. We work with 10 young people for each project, who are nominated by their workers. Through creative arts and self-reflective approaches, we encourage participants to find their own answers, exploring their unique perceptions of purpose, motivation and creativity. We then support participants to practically apply these learnings to their everyday life: through goal setting, personal challenges, and structured implementation. We can also offer bespoke packages.

Creative Expression

Each session uses a different art form, so that participants will be exposed to a whole range of creative practices including painting, photography, performance, creative writing, and crafting. By the end of the project, each participant will their own portfolio of artwork. We exhibit these pieces in an arts institution local to the group. We have collaborated with Tate Britain, the V&A Museum, Soho Theatre and the Saatchi Gallery.

After a project

Once they’ve completed a project, young people become part of our network. This means access to regular reunion trips (including free tickets to shows and exhibitions) as well as opportunities through Element and our network partners. Read more here.

Client Feedback

“The Element Project was a positive experience for all involved; both professionals and young people. The programme was explained very well in advance and staff liaised closely with management regarding recruiting young people to the project, answering any questions and providing important feedback following sessions. Their enthusiasm and style of engagement meant that the drop-out rate was extremely low and many young people with complex needs remained on the programme throughout and have continued to engage in follow-up sessions including theatre trips. The exhibition was a pivotal moment for many care leavers and the change in their demeanours – their increased confidence and self-esteem, their joy at leading managers, senior managers and councillors around the exhibition to showcase their work, was a joy to see. The follow up opportunities have also been extremely helpful. Most importantly, many young people who might have previously been quite isolated and had very small peer groups, had an opportunity to meet regularly with other care leavers in a positive and upbeat forum.”

- Care Leavers Team Manager, Brent Council

“The course was well put together: there was a good range of activities, and the crafty activities engaged the young people really well. The drama class was surprisingly effective at engaging the young people and drawing out ideas. The ability to take tangible items home played well with some of the young people.”

- Learning Manager, Hackney Virtual School

“I have found Element a very good organisation to work with. They have been reliable, good communicators and very flexible. They understand our area of work and priorities. In terms of the work itself feedback from the projects they have run for us has been very positive. I have spoken with young people who have been very positive about them, attendance has been consistently good, evaluation forms have been positive and some young people chose to attend 2 programmes as they found it so helpful. They have held exhibitions at the Tate, V&A, City Hall and Battersea Arts Centre and there is a sense of pride from the young people that their art work is being displayed.”

- Former Assistant Director for Looked After Children and Care Leavers, Triborough

“Element are positive, reliable and efficient. They are able to work with the most challenging students and remain upbeat. The content was varied and always engaging. Students looked forward to the sessions.”

- Outreach Coordinator, New River College
